Peer Advisor Spotlight: Meeting Academic Requirements

by Nathan Lindsey, CALS sophomore majoring in Agricultural Science

Trying to meet the requirements of your college, major, and minors can be overwhelming sometimes. The laundry list requirements can seem difficult or even impossible to complete in just four year. However, if you feel this way, the CALS Student Service Office can help you navigate through the CALS requirements and ensure that you are on track for graduation.

At the Student Services Office, the staff can help you plan out the completion of the CALS requirements by going over classes that fulfill requirements. They can suggest classes that will fit your schedule, complement your major, or make you a more marketable person when out of school. Additionally, the staff has a list of forbidden overlap classes, which are also available online, to help you avoid taking classes that are you have already received credit for. Scheduling an appointment is easy. The first method is coming into the office and scheduling an appointment at the front desk. The second option is to call the office and schedule an appointment by phone. The two people who can help you most with this process are Shawna Lockwood and Torrey Jacobs.

Coming prepared is the best way for the staff to help you. Already having a tentative outline of courses you plan to take at Cornell is a good way to start. Also bringing your major requirements with you to your appointment will maximize your time with the staff. Navigating through all of the requirements at Cornell can be difficult, but resources are available to help guide you through the process. Using these resources can make your time here a lot less confusing and a lot more enjoyable.
